Whitewater 101

Confidence Starts Here
WW101 is our beginner whitewater kayaking course for people with little to no paddle experience. Over six weeks, students learn the foundations of reading water, boat control, paddle technique, and river safety through structured instruction on the Lower Saluda River in Columbia, South Carolina.
Designed around a supportive, challenge-by-choice approach to learning, each session builds progressively on the last as students develop confidence and comfort on moving water. Along the way, students gain real river experience while becoming part of Columbia’s local paddling community.
No experience needed — just show up ready to get wet.

Who Is The Class For?
WW101 is designed for people who are new to whitewater kayaking or looking for a structured introduction to the sport. No previous paddling experience is required.
The class is a good fit for people who enjoy learning through hands-on experience, are comfortable being challenged, and want to build confidence on moving water in a supportive environment. Some students arrive with outdoor or flatwater paddling experience, while others are stepping into a kayak for the first time.
Whether your goal is to learn a new skill, spend more time outside, meet people in the local paddling community, or eventually progress toward more challenging rivers, WW101 is built to provide a strong foundation.

What to Expect

WW101 is built around real river experience from the very beginning. Over six weeks, students progressively develop boat control, river awareness, safety skills, and confidence through repeated practice on moving water. Tuesday evening sessions focus on instruction and skill development, while Sundays put those lessons into action on the Lower Saluda River. As the course progresses, students move from learning the basics to running rivers with greater comfort, control, and independence — culminating in additional river trips and a graduation weekend in the mountains of western North Carolina.
