Join us for an intensive, hands-on River Safety and Rescue course designed for kayakers, rafters, and river enthusiasts. This full-day course will equip you with the essential skills and knowledge to handle emergencies on the river, focusing on safety, rescue philosophy, and practical rescue techniques.

 

Course Agenda:

 

• 0800-0830 - Introductions & Logistics: Kick-off the day with introductions, paperwork, and an overview of materials and the day’s agenda.

• 0830-0930 - Rescue Philosophy & Safety: Learn the fundamental priorities of river rescue, including the LAST and RETHROG principles.

• 0930-1000 - Hazards & Hydrology: Understand river hazards, hydrology, and how to assess and rate river conditions.

• 1000-1030 - Equipment Review: A thorough review of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Pre-Rescue Equipment (PRE).

• 1030-1115 - Knots & Anchors: Master the essential knots and anchors used in river rescue.

• 1115-1200 - Intro to Mechanical Advantage: Learn about mechanical advantage systems, including Strong Arm, Vector, Swigging, and 2:1 setups.

• 1200-1230 - Lunch Break: Take a break, enjoy lunch, and prepare for the afternoon’s practical sessions.

• 1230-1330 - Swimming & Throw Rope Practice: Dive into the water to practice entry techniques, passive and aggressive swimming, and throw rope skills. This session includes pendulum, hip, and dynamic belay skills/vector.

• 1330-1400 - River Wading: Learn and practice river wading techniques, including single wading with a paddle, tandem wading, and wedge/line of stern formations.

• 1400-1430 - Boat-Based Rescue: Hands-on practice in boat-based rescue scenarios.

• 1430-1600 - Rescue Scenarios: Apply your knowledge in realistic rescue scenarios guided by our expert instructor, Shannon.

• 1600-1630 - Course Closing & Hot Wash: Wrap up the course with a debrief and feedback session, discussing what you’ve learned and how to continue developing your skills.
